A Day In the Life of a Production Student!

March 4, 2011 at 2:19 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

Before the live show airs at 4:30 p.m., production students in NewsWatch begin their day around 9 a.m. preparing for the newscast. I’m going to show you what they do throughout the course of a day. Take a look…

Welcome to the Morning Meeting! Around 9:15 a.m., production students sit down with coffee and doughnuts and of course Dean Lodato, the broadcast news director, Jim Jacoby, the production manager and Sue Green, the assistant news director to discuss the vision of the show for the  day.

This is the Assignment  Desk, where new stories  are brought to life.  Students are informed of  breaking news from this  state-of-the-art desk.

Once the stories are distributed to certain reporters, the creation of the rundown and the scripts begins.

Now that the rundown is  complete, students can  set up equipment for  specific live shots of the  reporters. This includes  cameras and lighting.

Hello $75,000 camera! After the director and the production crew decide on the shots, such as an MCU (medium close-up) or an OTS (over the shoulder) shot they can test them in the camera before the show.

Time to write out  the scripts! Before  rehearsal, the director  will go through the thick  packet of papers with a  Sharpie and write out  cues, camera shots, out  times, reporters mics and  much more.

Rehearsal! Around 3 p.m. or sometimes a bit later, the production crew and the reporters try and get in two or three rehearsals before the live show. This is a great time to work out any problems, re-write scripts and handle any technical difficulties.

Ready to go Live! When the time comes for the live show, Dean Lodato, Jim Jacoby, Sue Green, and Melanie Alvarez, the executive producer, are in the room making sure everything goes smoothly and offering assistance and advice along the way. This is why Cronkite dominated the BEA Competition again this year! We have an incredible team!

Welcome to the Post Meeting! After each live show, everyone meets outside of the control room at 5 p.m. for a wrap up of the show and the day. Dean Lodato will discuss the overall quality of the show and then go into more detail about each reporter and the stories they covered. He will also offer tips and highlight things that went well during the show.

Welcome to the Control Room! Let’s Take a Tour…

A great way to get a taste of these positions and this equipment is to take Brian Snyder’s Studio Production Class, also known as JMC 194!

I was in this class as a sophomore during my fall semester and let me tell you I looked forward to coming every Friday morning and I couldn’t wait to see what role I would play for the day.

This hands-on course will give you the best experience for NewsWatch because one week you may be the director and the next week you could be an anchor.

A Closer Look:

Technical Director’s Colorful Keyboard!

Special Tip: Looking at this massive board can be extremely intimidating. Don’t let it be! Start by finding the most crucial keys first. Those would be the camera keys, and the take button. After that, practice, practice, practice!

Director’s Chair!

Special Tip: Picture this…your in the hot seat, your adrenaline is rushing and the last thing you want to do is make a mistake because the entire show revolves around you.

-Write out your scripts and make sure you can read them

-Know the overall rundown of the show

-Pay special attention to the clock because you need to fade to black by a specific time

-Be prepared to have unexpected things happen during the show…that is half the fun.

This Is Where It All Happens!

Special Tip: Upon entering the control room, you will find that the atmosphere is very calm. That is the most important tip I could give you. Remain Calm during stressful situations! Remember, if your relaxed, the other members of the team will feel better about the situation and the show will continue to flow smoothly!
